In the Roclincourt Valley Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave of 24/666 Corporal Michael Davison serving with the Northumberland Fusiliers (Tyneside Irish) 24th Battalion who died 09/04/1917.

Derek Johnstone has provided the following:

Michael Davison was born on December 4th 1891 at Ryhope, County Durham, and baptised on January 3rd 1892. His parents were Robert Davison from Whitehaven, Cumberland, and Ann Davison (nee Dunn) from Chesterfield, Derbyshire.

In 1901 Michael was nine years old and living at 39, Burdon Street, Ryton, with siblings John 10, Kathleen 5 and Mary aged 1. Also in the same house were his uncle Thomas Davison and his grandfather Davison.

The 1911 Census records Michael, aged 19, single and working as a putter in the coalmines. At this time he was living at 15, Scotland Street, Ryhope where his mother Ann, widow, was head of the household. Others in the house included siblings Kathleen 15, Mary 11, and Clement (brother) aged 8.

Military information confirms his place of birth as Ryhope, and he enlisted at Sunderland. Michael’s Pension Index Card only shows his mother Ann, indicating he was probably was not married. His effects were allocated between his mother Ann, brother John, sister Kathleen and sister Mary.

Information from John Sheen’s book Tyneside Irish shows Michael was in B Company and was living at 15, Scotland Street, Ryhope, before enlisting. Michael was wounded in his hip and back and admitted to 34 CCS on July 2nd 1916 and then evacuated to Birmingham on July 5th 1916.

Michael Davison is remembered in Ryhope on R52.01, in Sunderland in S140.048 page 55 and S140.048 page 240 and in our list of Tyneside Irish
