In St. Cuthbert's Churchyard is a family headstone for Cruikshanks which reads:
In loving memory of Ralph J. Cruikshanks died December 29th 1924 aged 56 years, Margaret [his] wife died April 28th 1925 aged 52 years, William Stanley their son killed in action April 9th 1917 aged 20 years, Eva Mary their daughter died July 15th 1918 aged 17 years.

He is named on the Scout Roll of Honour 1914-18 as being late Patrol Leader of the 1st Herrington Troop (West Durham).
