On the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France is the name of 17/1323 Lance Corporal Herbert Kay serving with the 14th Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers who died 14/07/1916.

Son of William Kay, of High St., Easington Lane, Hetton-le-Hole, Co. Durham.

In Hetton Cemetery is a family headstone which reads:-

In loving memory of
Mary
beloved wife of William Kay
who died Dec. 23rd 1931 aged 75 years
also William beloved husband of the above
died Aug. 16th 1943 aged 89 years
Also Herbert Kay killed in action
July 14th 1916 aged 25 years

Herbert Kay is remembered at Easington Lane on E71.01 and at Hetton le Hole on H125.06
