The Teesdale Mercury 31/10/1945 reports:-

Funeral of Middleton Soldier Killed in Accident

the interment took place on Friday at St Mary's Churchyard of Mr Jack Morton of Hude, Middleton in Teesdale, the victim of a car accident near Carlisle on Monday week.

Jack Morton was 32 years of age and was extremely popular in Teesdale. For some years he was employed as grocery traveller for the local Co-operative Stores.

He was a keen member of the Mechanics' Institute. He joined H.M. Forces about five years ago and saw service in France and after being wounded spent some time in hospital.

He expected to be released early in 1946 and while spending his leave accepted an invitation to spend some days with a friend near Carlisle

It was while journeying there by car a collision took place with an R.A.F. wagon and Mr Morton and his friend were both injured and taken to hospital where Mr Morton died.

The Rev. W. Fryer, Vicar of Forest-in-Teesdale conducted the service. There was a large attendance of relatives, employees of the Cooperative Stores, past and present, members of the board of directors, members of the Mechanics' Institute, the Baptist Church and the general public.

Mr Morton's father was killed in action in the last war and he is survived by his sister, Miss Edna Morton, with whom extensive sympathy is manifest.

John Atkinson Morton is remembered in Middleton in Teesdale on M39.01 and M39.03
