The strain of duty laid the foundation of a serious illness, by which he had been confined to his bed for two months and the end was not unexpected. He leaves a widow and two daughters.

The remains left Nottingham at half past twelve on Saturday morning and in due course reached Barnard Castle by the first Darlington train.

The funeral was a two o'clock in the same afternoon, a brief service being held in St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church and completed at the graveside by the resident priest Father B. Darley.

A party composed of a detachment of the Durham Light Infantry under the command of Lieut. Langland fired three volleys over the grave and trumpeters of the Royal Field Artillery sounded the last post.

Twelve lovely wreaths adorned the roof of the hearse. Messrs Hopewell and Sons, Nottingham made the coffin which was of polished oak and Mr Tom Borrowdale, Newgate had charge of the local arrangements.
