Young, R.E., Pte., 1918
In Marfaux British Cemetery, Marne, France, is the Commonwealth War Grave of 60672 Private Robert Elliott Young serving with 2/5th Battalion, Prince of Wales's Own West Yorkshire Regiment who died 20/07/1918.

Peter Wise and Brenda McMahon have submitted the following:-

Robert born at Barnard Castle in 1899 was the youngest son of Thompson Bowman Young and his wife Mary (nee Elliott). He was baptised on August 6th 1899.

On the 1901 census his widowed mother, Mary, was living on her own means. The family of 5 boys lived with Mary's father, Robert Elliott, at 9/11 Thorngate Wynd. His siblings were Alfred, Frederick, Ernest and Walter.

In 1911 family circumstances had changed as 3 of the boys had left home leving Walter and Robert with their mother. At the time of the census a nephew Edward Elliott, was staying with them. He was a soldier. Although the 1901 census had shown mother, Mary, as living on her own means she is now described as a charwoman.

Robert enlisted on 31st May 1917 and was allocated to the Training Reserve at Brocton Camp. His service number at that time was 7332. He stated his trade was as a joiner.

He embarked for France April 1st 1918 and was posted to the West Yorkshire Regiment where he served as number 60672. He joined his battalion in the field on June 18th 1918 but was reported missing July 20th 1918. It was noted he was either killed in action or died of wounds on or about that date.

His total service amounted to 1 year 52 days.

His brother Ernest was also killed in 1918.

Robert Elliott Young is remembered at Barnard Castle on B135.02, B135.23 and B135.25
