Nixon, T.W., Sgt., 1914-18 (1921)
In the Protestant Cemetery, Haifa, Israel is the grave of Thomas Watson Nixon who died 03/12/1921.

Peter Wise and Brenda McMahon have submitted the following:-

Thomas was the son of Joseph Winter Nixon and his wife Elizabeth (nee Watson). He was born at Marwood, Durham in 1897. The couple married at Middleton in Teesdale on May 24th 1888 and went on to have 6 children together although their son, Joseph sadly died at the age of 1 year 4 months.

The family lived at Marwood Cottages in 1901. His father was a gamekeeper/farmer.

By 1911 the children of the family included Dora, George Walter (plumber), William engine cleaner with North Eastern Railway Company, whilst Thomas and John Albert were still at school. There were also 2 visitors at the home on census night.

Thomas possibly served as a Transport Sergeant, with the Railways, WO 329 part of the Royal Engineers Regiment Number :W.R.286205.

After the end of the war he was employed as a driver for the Government Locomotive Superintendent of the Palestine Railways. His final job had been to take a motor trolley ahead of a train from Harta to Jerusalem that was carrying a VIP. On his return from Harta the trolley left the line and he was killed. The date was December 3rd 1921.

His brothers George Walter, William and perhaps also John Albert served in WW1.

Thomas Nixon is remembered at Barnard Castle on B135.02, B135.23 and B135.25
