Wilson, J.P., Pte., 1918
On Vis-en-Artois Memorial, Pas de Calais, France, is the name of 45137 Private Joseph Pearson Wilson serving with 2nd Battalion Alexandra, Princess of Wales’s Own Yorkshire Regiment (Green Howards) who died 29/09/1918.

Joseph was born at Barnard Castle on March 19th 1898 and was baptised as a Roman Catholic later that same month on the 27th March. His parents were Robert and Jane (nee Weston) who went on to have 6 children who included Francis Joseph, Margaret Hannah, William, Henry and Robert.

Father, Robert was a successful tradesman. He was a master builder in stone and an employer. He died in 1913.

Census returns show son, Francis (aka Frank) was a stone mason, Margaret helped at home, William was an apprentice stone mason and Robert junior.

Joe enlisted at Newcastle and was killed in the advance on Cambrai on 29 September 1918.

The following article was published in the Teesdale Mercury 16/10/1918.

“Miss Wilson, 1, Victoria Terrace East, Barnard Castle, has received notice from the Record Office at York informing her that a report had been received from the War Office notifying the death of her youngest brother, Joseph Pearson Wilson , of the Yorkshire Regiment, who was killed in action on the 29th of September. Private Wilson, who was a son of the late Mr Robert Wilson, contractor, and brother to Mr F. J. Wilson, of Victoria Terrace East, was in the same battalion as Second Lieut. Stembridge, and they met in the trenches and conversed together a few days before they were both killed. Private Wilson, who was only twenty years of age, was in the employment of Mr C. Harker when he was called to the colours. He had excellent, prospects, being naturally clever, and had the advantage of a collegiate education. Much sympathy and commiseration are extended to the family. “

Joe left an amount of £359.11.5d to his sister, Margaret Hannah.

His brother William died at Ypres in 1917 whilst Frank died December 6th 1918.
