Joseph Grundy was born in 1896 at Twizell the son of Johnson and Jane nee Grundy Robinson. In 1901 Johnson was a Colliery Engineman. The family consisted of John Thomas 1889, Elizabeth 1891, Mary Ann 1895, Joseph Grundy 1896 and Eleanor 1899. By 1911 the family were at 4 Twizell Road by which time Johnson had died . John Thomas was a journeyman butcher, Elizabeth a shop assistant and Joseph a joiner. Johnson Robinson born 1905 completed the family.

Joseph enlisted 28th September 1914. He was 19 years and 3 months old, 5 foot 7 inches, and worked for James Joicey and Co, Twizell Colliery as a Mechanic. He had been a member of the Church Lads Brigade.

He joined the Royal Army Medical Corps and was appointed to the 1st Northern General Hospital at Newcastle upon Tyne. He remained in England until 3rd September 1915 when he was moved to the Hospital Ship Panama. He served on this ship till his discharge 27th February 1919. He rose through the ranks to Lance Corporal.

Joseph was discharged due to pulmonary tuberculous 5th April 1919. He returned to 4 Twizell Road and was awarded a pension of 40 shillings a week. Joseph died 15th April 1920.
