PELTON FELL

Strachan, H., Pte., 1918
In Niederzwehren Cemetery, Kassel, Hessen, Germany is the Commonwealth War Grave of 300795 Private Henry Strachan serving with the 1/8th Durham Light Infantry who died 07/11/1918.

Dorothy Hall has submitted the following:-

Henry James , born in 1897 at Pelton Fell was the son of James and Mary Ann Strachan. He had two brothers, Thomas Naylor and Robert and three sisters, Sarah Ann, Catherine and Elizabeth Jane.

In 1911, aged 14 he was still at school.

Henry (3509) joined the local 8th Battalion of the Durham Light Infantry at Chester-le-Street with his brother Robert (3508). He went to France 30th October 1915.

Henry died a Prisoner of War in a German Hospital 7th November 1918 from exhaustion and cardiac arrest.

His mother Mary Ann had died at the family home 20 Lonsdale Street, Newfield, Pelton Fell on the 29th of July 1917 and is buried at Pelton Cemetery. His father later moved to Allansford, near Castleside.

Recipient of the 1915 Star, the British War Medal and Victory Medal.

His brother Robert had died of wounds in 1916.

He is also remembered in The DLI Book of Remembrance page 310 and in the Battalion History page 262
