On the Arras Memorial to the Missing, Arras, France, is the name of 27/1467 Private Matthew York, serving with the Northumberland Fusiliers, who died 10/04/1917.

Matthew York was born in 1886 at Newfield, Pelton Fell, the youngest son of John and Margaret York.

In 1910 Matthew, a miner, married Barbara Marshall and their son Albert was born in 1911 and daughter Ethel in 1912.

Matthew joined the Northumberland Fusiliers (16/1467) 16th Battalion in 1915. He went to France 22nd November 1915.

Matthew was wounded on the 1st July 1916 serving with Number 11 Platoon 'C' Company and after this was transferred to the 27th Battalion (4th Tyneside Irish) Northumberland Fusiliers.

Matthew was reported missing 10th April 1917. Confirmation of his death reached his wife in September 1917.
