William Kirby has submitted the following:-

George William, born in 1887 at Milkwellburn, near Medomsley was the son of George and Margaret Riddle.

In 1901 the family were living at 2, Pelaw Square, South Pelaw, Chester-le-Street. George was a Coal Miner Hewer. His children Edward (1877 Dipton Coal Miner Hewer), Jane (1881 Sunnybrow), George W. (Pony Driver below ground) and Christopher (1900 Chester-le-Street).

In 1911 George William with his wife Eva (1888 Wombelton Yorkshire are living with his widowed father at 6, High Flatts, between Chester-le-Street and Pelton. By this time George William was a Coal Miner Hewer. George William and Sarah Eva Wright married in late 1910 in the Chester-le-Street District.

Margaret Riddle had died aged 52 years in February 1911, George aged 56 died in October 1912. Both are buried in Pelton cemetery.

George William enlisted at Chester-le-Street and joined the Northumberland Fusiliers. He embarked for France 3rd August 1915.

George William died of wounds at Endell Street Military Hospital, Covent Garden London 30th July 1918.

Chester-le-Street Chronicle 09/08/1918 reports-

On Sunday a large crowd assembled at Pelton cemetery on the occasion of a military funeral of Pte. G. Reddle (sic), N.F. 6 High Flatts Chester-le-Street who died as the result of wounds received on 19th April, his body being brought home for burial. The deceased before the war worked at South Pelaw colliery, where he was a member of the ambulance team. He was acting as a stretcher bearer when he was wounded.

Recipient of the 1915 Star, The British War Medal and the Victory Medal.

Sarah Eva (married name Heslop) died 29th March 1957 aged 68 years and is buried with George at Pelton cemetery.
