William Kirby has submitted the following:-

William born at Pelton about 1894, was the son of Thomas and Ann Marshall.

In 1911 the family was living at 7, Brown's Buildings Chester-le-Street. William was working aged 17 years in a local coal mine. The family moved to 5, Institute Terrace East, Ouston.

William enlisted at Newcastle and joined the Tyneside Scottish Northumberland Fusiliers. He rose to the rank of Lance Corporal.

He died of wounds at Dover Military Hospital 26th April 1917 aged 23 years.

Recipient of the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.

William Marshall is remembered at Pelton on P26.01 and at Birtley on B127.01
