William Kirby has submitted the following:-

Thomas was born 9th November 1897, at Brecon Hill, Lumley, the son of Thomas and Elizabeth nee Scorer Moody. He had two sisters - Elizabeth Annie born 1894 and Eleanor born 1896. His parents had married in 1893. His father died late 1898 when he was 26 years old.

In 1901 Elizabeth and her three children were boarders with the Lawson family at Princes Square Great Lumley.

Thomas was only 16 when he attested at Chester-le-Street, on September 2nd 1914 and joined the Durham Light Infantry. His short service sheet gave his age as 19 years and 4 months!

Thomas embarked for France the 25th August 1915 and was severely wounded 13th October 1915. He had many operations and was discharged 19th June 1917. His records show he was a steady and sober man. In his paper work he was said to be both 22 years and 2 months and 19 years and five months. He was awarded the Silver War Badge and a pension.

Thomas died at the Mayfield V.A.D. Hospital at Jarrow. His address is given as Brecon Hill, Lumley. Cause of death was Nephritis and gun shot wound to his right arm. He was an Army Pensioner.

Recipient of the 1915 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal.

Thomas was buried at Christ Church Lumley and in 2014 the CWGC agreed that he qualified for commemoration, a CWGC headstone has now been erected on his grave.

He is not remembered in the DLI Book of Remembrance.
