John Thomas Appleby

In Etables Military Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave of 242819 Private John Thomas Appleby serving with the West Yorkshire Regiment (Prince of Wales's Own) who died 04/11/1018.

William Kirby has submitted the following:-

John Thomas was born at Bank Head Fencehouses the son of John and Mary Jane Appleby. He had a number of siblings of which he was the oldest; Edith Mary, George Henry, William Arthur, Elizabeth Alice, Sylvia, James Lumsden. In 1911 the family plus Brother in law Robert Curry (married to Edith) and their daughter Isabel aged one year were all living at Finchale Terrace Lumley 6th Pit in a four roomed house.

John Thomas enlisted at Houghton le Spring first with the 18th Durham Light Infantry with Service Number 18/1211. He was later transferred to the West Yorkshire Regiment with Service Number 242819.

He entered the theatre of war in Egypt 22nd December 1915.

John Thomas Appleby married Mahala G. Baker in the first quarter of 1918. She was living at Fencehouses when John Thomas died 4th November 1918.

John Thomas was awarded the 1915 Star, The British War Medal and the Victory Medal.

Mahala Green Appleby died first quarter of 1973 Durham Northern. She had been born 14th April 1892 and was 80 years old when she died.
