In Etaples Military Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave of 61227 Serjeant Charles Young, serving with Royal Army Medical Corps who died 01/06/1918.

Royal Army Medical Corps

He was the son of Jane and the late John Young of Laburnum House, Rowlands Gill, County Durham he was born at Winlaton, County Durham. A Colliery Official he was Initiated Into 3067 Tynedale Lodge, Ord Arms Hotel, Scotswood-on-Tyne on the 2nd April 1914; Passed 7th May 1914 and Raised on the 13th August 1914. He enlisted at Newcastle and was killed in action on the 31st May 1918 aged 33. He is buried in Etaples Military Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France, Grave Reference LXVII.E.35

Editor’s note: CWGC records show his unit as the St. John’s Ambulance Brigade. He must therefore have been attached to them as there was a large military hospital at Etaples.

Charles Young is remembered at Rowlands Gill on R46.01 and in Gateshead on G39.030
