On Thiepval Memorial to the Missing is the name of 43252 Private Edward McCarton serving with 10th Battalion West Yorkshire Regiment (Prince of Wales Own) who died 08/11/1916.

Brenda McMahon submitted the following:-

Edward was born at Lamesley in 1890. He was the son of Joseph and his wife Margaret Ellen who had 6 children. His siblings included Sarah, Thomas, Violet and Joseph.

In 1911 the family were at 58 Dean Street Low Fell, his father was a coal miner, Edward (21) a coal screener and brother Thomas (18) a Colliery timekeeper, Joseph (11) was still at School.

Edward married his sweetheart Elizabeth Jackson during the summer of 1913.

Edward enlisted into the army at Gateshead. He was formerly with Durham Light Infantry (31519) before serving with West Yorkshire Regiment.

Edward was killed in action 8 November 1916 aged 26 years.

Recipient of the British War Medal and Victory Medal.

He is remembered at Kibblesworth on K23.02 and at Gateshead on G39.039
