Shields, J., Pte., 1916

On Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France, is the name of 23/267 Private John Shields serving with 23rd Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers (Tyneside Scottish) who died 01/07/1916.

Brenda McMahon has submitted the following:-

John Pratt was the son of Robert and Hannah Shields born at Kibblesworth c1893. The couple had 9 children 2 of whom died. They were John, Robert, Jane, James, Stephen, Lily and Hannah.

In 1911 the family were living at 10 New Row Kibblesworth. His father, brother Robert and John all worked in the mine.

John enlisted into the Army at Newcastle and joined the Northumberland Fusiliers. He was killed on the first day of the battle of the Somme, 1 July 1916.

Recipient of the British War Medal and Victory Medal

Following the War his mother was living at 10 Coronation Street Kibblesworth.

John Shields is remembered at Kibblesworth on K23.01 and K23.02
