Michael Burns served through the South African War with the 1st Battalion (34th Foot) Border Regiment and was awarded 5 clasps to the Queen's South Africa Medal, seeing service at Cape Colony, Orange Free State, Transvaal, Tugela Heights and the Relief of Ladysmith. He was awarded the King's South Africa Medal with two clasps, then was transferred to the 2nd Battalion, (55th foot), Border Regiment and saw further service in India.
Michael was employed at Ravensworth Colliery prior to the war.
On the outbreak of the war, Michael Burns re-enlisted in the Border Regiment at Whitehaven. He was sent to France on the 25th November 1914.
He was killed at Neuve-Chapelle on the 12th March 1915.
