Robert Moore was born 1889 at Wardley Colliery, County Durham, one of 9 children of whom only 5 survived, 3 sons and 2 daughters. His father Thomas Moore was born at Killingworth, Northumberland, June 11th 1844 and married Elizabeth Lightfoot born May 20th 1856 at Monkton Village, Jarrow, Northumberland, in the district South Shields October 9th 1876 and had moved to Wardley by 1883. Thomas was a master butcher by trade, however, unfortunately he died aged 63 years, September 7th 1907, by 1911 Elizabeth was living at 84, Waggonway Street, Wardley Colliery, Gateshead along with her 4 unmarried children. Thomas (24) had continued his father’s trade as a master butcher, Robert (21) was employed as a draftsman at the colliery, William (19) was a butcher’s apprentice and Elizabeth (12) a scholar. Tragedy struck again when Elizabeth died April 25th 1914, just prior to the outbreak of war, aged 57 years.

On the outbreak of war Robert enlisted assigned to the Royal Engineers as Sapper T/1689. His military record no longer exists one of the 70% destroyed during the blitz of WW2, it is therefore impossible to know his exact movements during the conflict, although he did rise through the ranks to Staff Sergeant 466223 serving with the 47th Anti-Aircraft Section Royal Engineers.

Staff Sergeant Robert Moore Royal Engineers died of illness November 11th 1918 the day the Armistice was signed between the Allies and Germany ending hostilities. He was interred at Abbeville Communal Cemetery Extension, Somme, France, grave V. C. 5. He was 29 years old and single.

His aunt Annie Richardson received all monies due to him and his awards of the British War Medal and Victory Medal.

Robert’s parents are buried at St. Mary Heworth churchyard, Gateshead, County Durham.

In God’s safe keeping. Rest In Peace.

Robert Moore is remembered at Heworth on H92.03 and at Wardley on W97.01
