F/Sgt. Michael was killed when Consolidated Liberator VI KK274 'B' of 37 Squadron was lost on a mission to attack marshalling yards at Villach. The force of Liberators was called back after low cloud was found over the target, but it thought that KK274 was hit by flak, and crashed near the target area with the loss of six of the seven crew members.
