In Halfaya Sollum War Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave of 540854 Leading Aircraftman Matthew Hetherington Winship, serving with the Royal Air Force who died 16/07/1940.

Simon Glancey has submitted the following:

LAC Winship was killed when Bristol Bombay L5848 was lost on a mission to Tobruk. The bomber was shot down by a night fighter, with the loss of all five crew members. The body of LAC Winship was washed ashore and buried; the others are named on the Alamein Memorial.
