On Tyne Cot Memorial is the name of 27538 Rifleman Edwin Smith, serving with the West Yorkshire Regiment (Prince of Wales's Own) who died 09/10/1917.

Edwin Smith was born in 1890, the son of Hugh and Elizabeth Smith of Warwick House, Wrekenton. He had four older siblings and four younger ones. His father was a self-employed butcher and Edwin’s elder brothers became butchers with the family business, but Edwin gained employment as a mason.

He served as a Private with 1st/8th Battalion, Prince of Wales’s Own (West Yorkshire) Regiment, regimental number 27538. He had transferred from the Durham Light Infantry, regimental number 30504. He was killed in action on the Western Front on 9th October 1917. Smith's butcher shop was still in Wrekenton High Street until well into the second half of the twentieth century.

His brother Haroldalso died in WW1.

He is remembered in Eighton Banks on E50.01 and E50.02
