On the Thiepval Memorial is the name of 20/1571 Private George Wardlow, serving with the Northumberland Fusiliers who died 01/07/1916.

Cumberland News WWI Index 26/08/1916 5c article gives: Wardlow, George, Private, Northumberland Fusiliers, Armathwaite, 01/07/1916 missing;
Cumberland & Westmorland Herald contains nothing.
He was born in Irthington, Cumberland and enlisted in Newcastle.
Medals: British and Victory. Presumed dead.
No War Service Record.
1891 Census at Irthington Schedule 19 gives: Parents Joseph 25; Janet 25, George aged 1.
1901 has George aged 11.
1911 has George Wardlaw, Boarder, aged 22, single, coal miner-hewer, living with Thomas Smith at 4B, Clyde Street, Chopwell, Ebchester.
In 1911 his family are still at Eden View, Armathwaite.

He is remembered in Chopwell on C92.02
