Sgt. Saxby was killed when Avro Lancaster III ND655 LE-J of 630 Squadron was lost on a mission to Brunswick. The Lancaster was lost without trace, along with the seven crew members.

Lancaster ND655 LE-J had departed East Kirkby at 2238 for Ops Braunschweig

It was intercepted at 5400M over the North Sea, 70km W of Callantsoog by a Night-Fighter captained by Nacht-Jagd “Experten” Oblt Dietrich Schmidt (VIII/NJG1) and shot down at 0348 for his 27th Abschuss
