On the Runnymede Memorial is the name of 1096832 Sergeant William Snowball Maben, serving with the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, who died 28/07/1943.

Sgt. Maben was killed when Avro Lancaster III ED708 ZN-O of 106 Squadron was lost on a mission to Hamburg. The Lancaster was lost without trace, along with the eight crew members.

Lancaster ED708 ZN-? had departed Syerston at 2300 for Ops Hamburg

It was possibly intercepted at 4000M over the North Sea nr Terschelling by a Night-Fighter captained by Ofw Walter Kubisch (Stab IV/NJG1) and shot down at 0237 for his 1st Abschuss
