McCombes, J.P.G., App., 1918
J.P.G. McCombes is listed as a former pupil at Durham Johnston School.

Joseph Peebles Grey McCombs was born in 1901 at Sherburn Hill, the son of Irish immigrants Joseph and Jane. He was baptised at Shadforth Church 27th February 1901.

In 1911 the family were living at 9 George Street, Bankhead, Fence Houses.

Sunderland Echo 09/07/1918 reads -

FENCE HOUSES.—A cablegram sent to the owners of his ship last Thursday by the captain states that Apprentice Joseph Q. (sic) G. McCombs (17), of Bank Head, who until six weeks ago was a teacher at Dubmire Council School, had been accidentally killed in America at the end his first voyage through a derrick falling.

He is remembered in Durham on D47.025 and at Houghton le Spring on H132.01
