In Brandon (St.John) Church Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave of DM2/196537 Private Leonard Doughty Brown, serving with the Army Service Corps who died 22/04/1917.

Jayne Seward, great-niece to Pte. Brown, has submitted the following:

"My great-uncle attended Browney School County Durham and worked at Browney Colliery before volunteering in November 1914.

He served as Able Seaman Leonard Brown with the Royal Naval Division at Gallipoli where he was wounded and also contracted dysentery.

He transferred to the Army Service Corps. He died in 1917 and is buried in Brandon Cemetery.

His full name is Leonard Doughty Brown.

I was born in Browney and went to the same school"
