J.W. Cook

In St Sever Cemetery, Rouen is the Commonwealth War Grave of 8395 Lance Corporal James Winter Cook serving with 6th Battalion King’s Own Scottish Borderers who died 11/08/1916.

William Kirby and Brenda McMahon have submitted the following:-

James was born at Silksworth on November 19th 1884 the son of John Henry Cook and Jane Ann (nee Winter).

In 1891 His father was a coalminer/hewer. The family lived at 36 South Plantation Row along with siblings William, Jane Ann, James and John Henry.

By 1901 new additions had arrived. They were Thomas, Edward, Albert George (died aged 2 years on July 6th 1878), Walter (born/died 1899 aged 2 months old)) and Thomas. The household was now at 14 Surgery Row, Trimdon Grange. The father was now working as a master shifter in coal mine whilst son James was a putter.

James married Mary Ann Owens in 1907. The children were John, Hilda, Naomi and James Albert who was born posthumously on November 29th 1916.

In 1911 now married and a family man they were living at Trimdon Grange.

James enlisted at Houghton le Spring in 1914 and joined the King's Own Scottish Borderers. His service records are no longer available except that James died of wounds received in action on August 11th 1916.

All monies due to him were allocated to Mary and their children - £5.16s.0d then later a war gratuity of £11.10s.0d. Mary’s pension for herself and children amounted to 22shillings and 6d as from February 9th 1917.
