Huntington, J.E., Gdsmn., 1940
In Wilsele Churchyard, Belgium is the Commonwealth War Grave of 2658528 Guardsman John Edward Huntington serving with the 1st Battalion Coldstream Guards who died 16/05/1940.

Brenda McMahon has submitted the following:-

John was the son of John and Mary Hannah Huntington of Evenwood, Bishop Auckland. He was born in 1920 and registered at Auckland County Durham.

He originally enlisted in the Foot Guards before being transferred to 1st Battalion, Coldstream Guards.

The British Expeditionary Force was involved in the later stages of the defence of Belgium following the German invasion in May 1940, and suffered many casualties in covering the withdrawal to Dunkirk.

John is remembered at Middridge on M51.01 and at Shildon on S122.02
