Burnside, A., Pte., 1944
In Uden War Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave of 4394690 Private Alfred James Burnside serving with 7th Battalion Green Howards (Yorkshire Regiment) who died 15/10/1944.

Brenda McMahon has submitted the following:-

Alfred was born on July 22nd 1915 the son of Alfred James and Isabella (nee Jacques Angus). The couple married on 17 October 1903 at Bishop Auckland Register Office. Alfred had two sisters who both predeceased him. Gladys May (1907-1940) and Olive Levinnia (1910-1911). His mother died young in 1918 at the young age of 31.

The family lived at Middridge where Alfred snr. was a colliery labourer.

The 1939 register shows Alfred as a single man working as a groom at Constable Burton Hall Stables, Leyburn.

Alfred joined the Green Howards at the start of WW2 and was reported to the War Office Casualty Branch on list 1589 for an incident dated September 13th 1944. Alfred died of wounds on October 15th 1944.

Alfred lies in Uden War cemetery, Noord-Brabant region, Netherlands alongside 699 of his comrades.

Alfred James Burnside is remembered at Middridge on M51.01 and at Shildon on S122.02
