MIDDRIDGE

Buck, A., Pte., 1940
In St Venant Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave of 4453403 Private Arthur Buck serving with the 2nd Durham Light Infantry who died between 22/05/1940-06/11/1941.

Brenda McMahon has submitted the following:-

Arthur was born the youngest son of James and Mary Ellen nee Pattison and was born at the beginning of 1920 in the Auckland Registration District.

He joined the Durham Light Infantry and was reported on various War Office Casualty lists as missing so because of this his date of death was not been specifically confirmed. The official records are that he died between 22/05/1940-06/11/1941.

During the 1939-45 War, St. Venant was the centre of heavy fighting when delaying actions covered the withdrawal of the British Expeditionary Force to the coast. In fact British troops continued fighting at St. Venant after the evacuation of Dunkirk, and 90 or more were buried in a mass grave in a field at St. Venant.

Arthur Buck is remembered at Middridge on M51.01 and at Shildon on S122.02

He is also remembered in The DLI Book of Remembrance page 31 which gives his date of death as May 22nd 1940
