Dodds, G.R., Pte., 1940
In St Venant Communal Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave of 4453414 Private George Rodger Dodds serving with 2nd Battalion Durham Light Infantry who died 26-27/05/1940.

Brenda McMahon has submitted the following:-

George Rodger (known as Rodger) was the son of Albert and Annie (nee Banks) who married in 1909.

In 1911 his parents lived at 31 Eden Pit New Shildon. Albert was a coal miner hewer at that time. The couple only had one child in 1911 Margaret a few months old. Within a few years other children were born including John (1911), Henry (1913), Ruth (1917) George R (1919) Frederick (1923) Thompson, (1926) Eleanor (1928) and Alice (1930).

In 1939 the register shows Albert an unemployed coalminer living at Eden Pit, Middridge living with Thompson, Eleanor and one other.

Rodger was reported missing during an action and later declared dead between 26/27 May 1940.

The inscription on his headstone reads “Unseen, Unheard But Always Near Us Dad and Mother

George Rodger Dodds is remembered at Middridge on M51.01 as Rodger and at Shildon on S122.02 as G. Roger
