SHOTLEY BRIDGE

Snowdon, W., Pte., 1916
In Ridge Wood Military Cemetery, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium, is the Commonwealth War Grave of 6/3245 Private William Snowdon serving with the 1st/6th Battalion Durham Light Infantry who died 14/04/1916.

Paul Heatherington has submitted the following:-

William was born in Ebchester in 1896. His father, also William Snowdon, died in the same year, just months before William was born. William’s mother was Hannah, née Proud, born in Medomsley. William was the fourth child in his family, his older siblings being named Alice, John and Ralph.

In 1901, the family were living at 30 Backstone Burn. By 1911, they had moved to Ashfield Cottage, Shotley Bridge. John, Ralph and William (aged fifteen) were all working underground as coal miners.

William enlisted as a Private in the Durham Light Infantry. He was killed in action in France on the 14th April 1916. His grave is at Ridge Wood Military Cemetery.
