SHOTLEY BRIDGE

Henderson, G.T., Pte., 1916
In Daours Communal Cemetery Extension, Somme, France, is the Commonwealth War Grave of 15853 Private George Thornton Henderson serving with the 12th Battalion Durham Light Infantry who died 25/07/1916.

Paul Heatherington has submitted the following:-

George was born in Newburn, Northumberland, in the summer of 1894. His father, William, came from Blanchland. His mother, Anne Caroline (née Thornton), came from Morpeth. George was the fourth child in his family. His siblings were William, Robert and Ethel. George’s father died when he was a young child. His mother was taken ill and in 1901 was a patient in the RVI in Newcastle. In 1901, at the age of seven, George was living in the home of his uncle Thomas Henderson at 42 Wood Street.

In 1911, he was working as a coal miner and boarding at 9 Snows Green Road.

George enlisted in Consett on the 1st September 1914. He was 5’ 6 ½’’ tall, weighed 8 stone 7lbs and had a chest measurement of 36 inches. He had brown eyes.

He served in the Durham Light Infantry and died on the 25th July 1916 at No 45 Casualty Clearing Station.
