In Ypres Reservoir Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave of 300838 Sergeant W. Dixon serving with the 12th Battalion Durham Light Infantry who died on the 20/09/1917.

Mathew William Dixon was born on the 15th March 1891 in West Stanley. He was the eldest son of John and Ellen Dixon, of 7 Gordon Terrace, Shield Row, Stanley. The 1911 census shows the family living at Shield Row, but William is "Mathew William Dixon". He is one of 8 surviving children and was employed as a stonemason.

At the outbreak of war William enlisted at Stanley and joined the 12th Battalion of the D.L.I.

He was killed on the 20th September 1917 aged 26 years.

Note His birth certificate shows his Christian name as Mathew, not Matthew.
