In Stanley New Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave with a private headstone of 2690 Corporal John Brewis serving with the Durham Light Infantry who died 20/06/1915.

The headstone reads:-

In loving memory of
Corporal John Brewis
Dearly beloved husband of
Mary Brewis of Stanley
And youngest son of
William and Margaret Brewis
of Tanfield Lea
who died at Sunderland Infirmary
on 26th June 1915 from wounds received
in France aged 32 years

He answered his country's call

Also the above Mary Brewis
died May 3rd 1950 aged 68 years

Son of William and Margaret Brewis, of Tanfield Lea; husband of Mary Brewis, of 12, Fairford Terrace, Stanley.

John Brewis is remembered at Stanley in S135.04

He is also remembered in The DLI Book of Remembrance
