In Stanley New cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave with a private headstone of Lieutenant J.E. Greenwell, serving with the Royal Air Force who died 16/07/1918

The headstone reads:-

Sacred
to the memory of
Lieut. J.E. Greenwell
only and much loved son of
R.W. & A. Greenwell
who met his death
by seaplane accident
at Newhaven July 16th 1918
After 3½ years service
in the Great European War
Aged 23 years

Gone to his rest through the pathway
of duty. Venturing his life
that others might live.
Such are the words on the tablet of beauty
Letters immortal in honour we give.

On left side

In sweetest memory
of my dear mother
Annie Greenwell
who departed this life
January 18th 1925
Aged 60 years
At Rest

John Edward Greenwell is remembered at Stanley on S135.04 as James Edward Greenwell with date of death 21st July 1918.
