“Stanley Hero Honoured.
Amidst tremendous enthusiasm, Sergt.-Major Albert Booth, D.C.M. of High Street, Stanley, was last night the recipient of several public presentations in the Front Street, opposite the Council offices, as a public appreciation of the military honour recently conferred upon him. The chief presentation took the form of a solid silver cigarette case, containing £10 in notes, whilst a sealed envelope was also handed the sergeant-major from his fellow workmen and officials of the Stanley Colliery. The chairman of the meeting (Coun. William McClenning) also stated that he was commissioned to say that the owners of the colliery intended to take suitable notice of the soldier’s bravery at a later date. Sergt-Major Booth was further the recipient of several private presentations. He only came home in the early hours of Sunday morning, and is due to return today (Thursday) so that a public testimonial was hurriedly arranged.”
