In Etaples Military Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave of 18603 Company Quartermaster Serjeant Oswald Little, serving with the 14th Battalion, Durham Light Infantry who died 26/10/1916.

Oswald Little was born the 26th December 1892, in Medomsley, Durham, son of Samuel James Little, of 31 West View, Medomsley, Durham. Registrar of Medomsley Colliery, and his wife Jane, daughter of the late Benjamin Thomas Adamson, of Swalwell, Durham.

Oswald was educated at the National School in Medomsley then Consett Secondary School.

He was employed at the Consett Iron Company's Otto Plant Delves before the war, as a Clerk and Assistant Chemist.

Voluntarily enlisted on the 16th September 1914, and was sent to France on the 11th September 1915.

At the battle of Loos, he ran the gauntlet of the enemy's fire with a message to bring up ammunition, was shot in the knee by a stray bullet from a machine gun, whilst delivering rations at night to the men in the trenches, unfortunately the wound he received necessitated amputation of the foot, when septic poisoning ensued. This caused his death at the 1st Canadian General Hospital at Etaples on the 26th October 1916.

Captain G. A. Richardson, Commanding his company wrote:-"He was a hard worker and very conscientious, and had he lived would have gone up for promotion, his name had been sent in for recommendation for good work."
