Cutter, E., Pte., 1916
On the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing is the name of 22/898 Private Edwin Cutter serving with the 22nd Battalion of the Northumberland Fusiliers who died 01/07/1916.

Edwin Cutter was born at Felling in 1895 the son of William Douglass Cutter and his second wife Barbara Elizabeth (Married 1888). In 1901 the family are at 1 Stephenson Terrace and William is a Grocer. The family consists of Robert (12), Elizabeth (11) Anthony (7), Edwin (5) and Sarah (3).In 1901 William Douglass died followed by Barbara's death in 1903. Orphaned Edwin was sent to Gateshead Guardians' Cottage Homes at Shotley Bridge.

In 1911 Edwin is a farm labourer at Robert Hedley's farm Newton Park at Mitford. His brother Robert (23) a hewer and putter and wife Edith are living at Wansbeck Place Morpeth. Anthony (17) is a farm worker at John Johnson's farm at Causey Hall Beamish.

When war broke out Edwin enlisted at Newcastle and joined the Northumberland Fusiliers.

Edwin was killed in action on the Somme 1st July 1916 and has no known grave.

He was awarded the British and Victory Medals and as his sole legatee his sister-in-law Edith received his effects.
