On the Pozieres Memorial, Somme, France, is the name of 53169 Private James Henry Cleugh serving with the 2nd Battalion (Prince of Wales Own) West Yorkshire Regiment who died 24/04/1918.

James Henry was born in Rock, near Alnwick, in 1882 to parents Rachel and Robert Cleugh, themselves born in Rock and Dunstan respectively. His siblings included Josephine born 1883, Edwin Richardson born 1885, Jane born 1886, John born 1888, Henry Jackson born 1890, Cecilia Mary born 1895, William Robert born 1898 and Violet Isabella born 1901. Like both his father and grandfather, James became a gardener and in the 1901 census was a lodger at Bothy Nurseries, Woodlands Road, Darlington. In the 1911 census he is resident at the Gardener’s Lodge, Burnhopeside Hall, Lanchester.

When James enlisted in Consett in December 1915 he gave his address as Riverdale House, Lanchester. This was the home of Mrs Dorothy Humble who is listed as a friend of James in his service record. James served in the West Yorkshire Regiment. In August 1916 he was treated at the Western General Hospital, Manchester for "Neurasthenia injury to the spine".

James died on 24th April 1918. He has no known grave and is remembered on the Pozieres Memorial.

All four of James' brothers served in WW1. Edwin with the Canadians, John with the Royal Engineers, Henry Jackson served with the Northamptonshire Regiment and Robert William with the Army Service Corps. His brothers survived the conflict.

Awards: British War Medal; Victory Medal.

James Henry Cleugh is remembered at Lanchester as Clough on L62.01 L62.02 and L62.04 and at Rock as Cleugh on R20.02 in the Alnwick Gazette Almanack at Howick on H78.03 and as James Clough on H78.01
