On Poizieres Memorial is the name of 0/691 Rifleman George Moffitt serving with the 7th Battalion Rifle Brigade who died 04/04/1918.

Dorothy Hall has submitted the following:

John George (known as Jack) Moffitt was the son of William George and Isabella Moffitt. He was born at Shotley Bridge in 1889.

In 1911 the family were living at 20 Ainsley Terrace Consett. Isabella had died in 1904 and William George (an Insurance Agent) had married Barbara White Oates in 1907. Jack was 22 years old and a Colliery labourer at bank.

Jack enlisted at Consett and joined firstly the R.A.S.C. service number S/4/056351 and secondly The Rifle Brigade 7th Battalion (The Prince Consort’s Own), Service number 0/691. Jack was presumed Killed in Action on the 4th April 1918 and is on the Pozieres memorial.

The Blaydon Courier 04/06/1921 has two In Memoriam entries:-

In loving memory of my dear husband W.G. Moffitt who died June 5th 1920, also our dear son Jack missing April 1918. Some from earth from glory come. Severed only “Till He comes!” Ever remembered by his loving wife, sons and daughters.

In loving memory of my dear father W.G. Moffitt died June 5th 1920, also my dear mother Isabella Moffitt died January 9th 1904 also my dear brother Jack Moffitt missing April 4th 1918. Ever remembered by their loving son and daughter in law Alex and Jennie.

Jack Moffitt is remembered at Consett on C101.01
