Royal Victoria Infirmary Coroner’s Report number 203 11th April 1917.

"Ernest Pendlebury aged 34 years. Private 3rd Battalion Durham Light Infantry, South Shields. Home address No 27 Jackson Square, West Kyo, Annfield Plain, died in 1st Northern General Hospital at 10.30 pm on 8th.

Deceased died from injuries received by having been accidentally knocked down by a Motor Car on the main road between Sunderland and South Shields near Fulwell Quarries on Friday 6th April 1917, whilst under the influence of drink."

He is remembered at Annfield Plain on A38.01 and A38.11
