On Tower Hill Memorial, London is the name of Pilot George Nelson Hastie serving as an Admiralty Deep Sea Pilot for the Lighthouse and Pilotage Authorities on S.S. Frithjof Eide who died 09/11/1917.

In South Shields (Harton) Cemetery is a family headstone which reads:

George N. Hastie
(Master Mariner)
lost at sea
Nov. 9th 1917 aged 66 years

also Emma, wife of the above
who fell asleep
Dec. 11th 1929, aged 76 years.

Also Edgar Atheling
dearly loved son of the above
lost at sea
June 1917, in his 17th year.

George Nelson Hastie jnr., was born at 55 Hendon Street, the second youngest of 8 children on the 22nd March 1851, died 9th November 1917, to father George Nelson Hastie Snr., born Sunderland 19th July 1817 in Sunderland, [son of a John Hastie born 1794, and his wife Jane nee Butler, born 1794], died 1886, and his wife Jane nee Longstaff, Hastie, born 9th October 1812, baptised 18th December 1813, [daughter of Henry Longstaff, born 1788, and Ann Oliver, born 1792], died 24th October 1857.  They were married 3rd December 1837.

The other children were: –

• Henry Hastie, born John Street, 16th September 1838, died 16th October 1840. Residing at Chapel Street, Sunderland.
• Henry Hastie, born High Street, Sunderland, 2nd May 1841, died at sea 6th November 1869 on board the Picton, ship number 69011.
• John Hastie, born High Street, Sunderland, 4th April 1843, died 1909 at South Shields. He married a Hannah nee Humble, born 1846, died 1912, on the 7th August 1866 at Sunderland. They had 8 children. In 1871, they were residing at 29 Lawrence Street, Sunderland. [Hannah Humble in 1851 was residing at 29 Silver Street, by 1861 she was at 11 Matlock Street, Sunderland]. By 1881, they were residing at 10 Lambton Place, Sunderland. By 1883, they had moved to Frederick Street, South Shields. By 1901, they were at 246 John Williamson Street, South Shields.
• Jane Ann Hastie, born 151 High Street, Sunderland, 27th September 1845, died 7th March 1849 at 9 Hill Street, Sunderland, of Convulsions.
• Margaret Emma Hastie, born 55 Hendon Street, Sunderland, 22nd September 1847, died 1920. She married a George Green, born March 1834, baptised 28th March 1834, died 1907, in 1868. [George’s 2nd marriage as his first wife, Ness Hall died in 1866. They were married 23rd April 1855, and had three children]. George and Margaret had ten children 4 boys 6 girls. They were residing at 10 Australia Street, Deptford, Sunderland, George was a Shipwright. By 1881, they were at 4 Catherine Street, then 15 Neville Street, Deptford in 1891. Finally in 1901 they are at 16 Neville Street.
• Jane Ann Hastie, born 24th March 1849 at 9 East Street, died not known In 1851, she was residing at 55 Hendon Street, Sunderland. She married in 1870 a William Taylor, born 1845. In 1871, they were residing at 28 Hendon Road, Sunderland.
• Ann Hastie, born 5th October 1853 at 9 East Street, Sunderland, died 1890. She married on the 24th June 1876 a Charles Edward Wright, born 1852, died unknown, at the Ebenezer Chapel on Fawcett Street, Sunderland. They had six children, three boys and three girls.

* The birth certificate does not show a Middle name of Longstaff.

George Nelson Hastie jnr., was apprenticed at age 15, into the Merchant Navy on the 20th August 1866 and indentured to a Mr J Dobbing for 4 years at Sunderland on the Castle Eden, ship number 51190, a sailing Brig. On the 5th September 1871, he receives his 2nd Mate Certificate. Then 15th March 1873, the First mate certificate is awarded. 6th March 1876, he receives his Master’s Certificate.

George Nelson Hastie was married in 1876, to Emma nee Pike, Hastie, born 1853, died 11th December 1929. They  had six children.

The children were;-

• Alice Maud Hastie, born at 11 Winchester Terrace, Sunderland, 6th November 1876, of 36 Blagdon Avenue, South Shields, died on 13th September 1958, at Milford Nursing Home, Durham. She married a William Barrow, born 9th February 1875, died 12th April 1954 at 36 Blagdon Avenue, South Shields, in 1906 in South Shields.
  In 1911, Alice and William were residing with their son, Wilfrid Barrow, born 12th April 1906, at 129, Marlborough Street, South Shields. William was a Joiner (ship repairing). In 1939 they were residing at 127 Marlborough Street, South Shields. They had a son, Wilfrid Malcolm Burrow who was a sales representative and in 1939 he was married and residing at Winifred House, Marsden Road, Cleadon South Shields, now a Credit Draper. His wife Elsie L. Barrow was born on the 3rd February 1907 and they had two children residing with them in 1939.
• George Henry Hastie, born Sunderland 12th August 1883 at 11 Winchester Terrace, Sunderland, died 12th September 1936 at 51, Farnham Terrace, Sunderland, George had been initiated into the Londonderry Lodge of the Freemasons on the 6th January 1913, and was a Marine Engineer. He married Jessie nee Ridley, [born 9th April 1883, died on 10th April 1963 of 4 Heatherlea Gardens, Sunderland, at The General Hospital, Sunderland], in 1914, at Sunderland.  In 1921, Jessie Hastie was residing with their two children, Edna Hastie, born 9th November 1915 [married  a George Mordey Chambers in 1941, in Sunderland, died 1968], and George Ridley Hastie, born 15th April 1917 [died April 1993]. on the 24th May 1921, George departed from Rotterdam and arrived in New York on Dungeness, ship number 136214, he was the  Chief Engineer and had been engaged at Cardiff on the 8th February 1921. 31st December 1923, George departed from Cardiff, Wales, arriving in New Orleans, Louisiana, on the Bradavon, ship number 142443, he was the First Engineer and had been engaged on the 10th December 1923. 1st December 1934, George departed from Vladivostok via Muroran, arriving in Seattle, Washington on the Ovington Court, ship number 145740, engaged as a First Engineer from the 3rd August 1934, in Sunderland.  George was buried in Bishopwearmouth Cemetery, Sunderland.   Probate to her daughter Edna Chambers [nee Hastie].
• William Charles Stanley Hastie, born 18th December 1884, at 11 Winchester Terrace, Sunderland, died 1925 at  Drummoyne, New South Wales, Australia. He married an Annie Blackburn Hall, born 1893 in Co. Durham, on the 28th August 1920, at the Cathedral Church of St. Andrew, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. William was a Bricklayer. Annie died on the 24th August 1938, in Wollongong, New South Wales, Australia, she is buried at Woronora Memorial Park, Sutherland, New South Wales, Australia.
• Florence Hastie, born Sunderland 25th January 1887, died 2nd April 1977, she married Richard Newton Ellis, born 1887, in 1912, in South Shields. In 1921, Florence and Richard were residing at 251, Stanhope Road, South Shields, with their two daughters, Jean Kathleen Ellis, born 1915, and Muriel Joan Ellis, born 9th June 1920. Richard was a Credit Draper Travelling in Clothing. in 1939, Florence and Richard were residing at 8, Mayfair Gardens, South Shields, with their daughter, Muriel Joan Ellis, a Bank Clerk, [who would later marry Guy G. Harford towards the end of 1948, in South Shields]. Richard died, aged 68, on the 5th January 1955.  Both are buried at Harton Cemetery.
• Edgar Atheling Hastie, born January 1894, died by drowning on Wednesday 12th June 1895.
• Edgar Atheling Hastie,  born on the 1st November 1900, at South Shields the youngest son, died in WW1.

In 1871, Emma Pike was residing with her parents at 85, Hendon Road, Sunderland, and she was the third of nine children.

In 1881, Emma Hastie, and her daughter Alice Maud Hastie, were residing with Emma’s parents, Henry Pike, born 1927, and Maria [nee Sharp], born 1928, at 84 and 85 Hendon Road, Sunderland, her father was a Fruiterer. Also at the home were Emma’s three brothers and her sister. One of her sisters Ann Pike, born 1856, married a James Brewis who was a butcher, died, aged 75, at the Royal Hospital, Sunderland, on 16th November 1931; Ann Brewis died, aged 78, on 28th August 1934. They had one child, Lance-Corporal Percy Victor Sharp Brewis, born 1891, died 1st October 1916. (He had enlisted into the 20th Service Battalion Durham Light Infantry with the service number 20/954. He married Louisa Bell Baldridge (1893-1968), in 1915. Percy Victor Brewis is remembered at Sunderland on S140.017, and in S140.048, part 2, part 6, part 7, part 8, part 9 and part 10, also at Durham in the DLI Book of Remembrance, page 268 and in D147.48, page 47.

The family resided at Sunderland until 1892 at 11 Winchester Terrace, then they moved to South Shields to 36 Marlborough Street, then 135 Marlborough Street. They also resided at 30 Hendon Valley Road at Bishopwearmouth,Sunderland in 1891. Emma in 1881 was residing with her parents at 84 Hendon Road, Sunderland.

Frithj of Eide, a Norwegian steam cargo ship was sunk by a torpedo fired by a German U Boat UB 75, commanded by Oberleutnant zur See Franz Walther, approximately 3.5 nautical miles East-North-East of Flamborough Head. She was en-route from Skien to London with a cargo of saltpetre.
His youngest son Edgar Atheling Hastie also died in WW1.

In 1921, widowed Emma Hastie, still resided at 131, Marlborough Street, South Shields, but was living alone.
