Search by Surname (Smith) or Surname plus Year of death (Smith 1917 –you will only get Every Name a Story Results)
or Place (Morpeth) or phrase (Durham Light Infantry/D.L.I./DLI, Northumberland Fusiliers, Tyneside Irish etc)
Hyphens from all North East place names, have been removed to assist the Search.
War Memorials
The 20th century, the bloodiest century in world history, twice saw the horrors of global warfare, plus other conflicts. Our local War Memorials tell the story of those who died and those who served and survived and are a reminder to all of the personal cost of conflict.
War Memorials are to be found in every high street, village, town and city in this country. However, they are today often ignored, overlooked and forgotten. They are snap shots in time of a country’s grief.
Why a community chose a certain type of War Memorial, who designed it, who built it and who paid for it has passed out of living memory. No one who was a member of a War Memorial Committee after the First World War is left alive. Many sets of committee minutes have been lost over time. Contemporary Newspaper reports contain much useful information.
What we have now are War Memorials of all conceivable forms and designs dedicated to one person, to ten people, or to a thousand or more.
The North East War Memorials Project believes that all memorials from all conflicts should be recorded and researched and the results made available to all. Our work is a tribute to the men and women named on the memorials.

North East Memorials Project
The Aims of the Project
The North-East War Memorials Project was established to record every War Memorial located in the historic counties of Northumberland, Newcastle-upon-Tyne and Durham with the addition of any areas included by the 1974 boundary changes.
How Did It All Start
In 1988, a letter appeared in the Times newspaper from the head of the Imperial War Museum suggesting that a list of war memorials be drawn up, as so many had been moved, or were in need of repair. This was taken up by the Association of the Northumberland Local History Societies as a good project for their membership. The Association had individuals as members as well as local history societies.
The Story So Far
The Project Group decided, at its very first meeting, in 2004 that a key means of making the database of material on War Memorials available to all would be a purpose-designed Website.
We applied to Heritage Fund Lottery and received a Grant of £49,000. The Website was launched in June 2006 designed by the late Paul Campbell and his team at Effective Internet.
Remembrance
Victories have been celebrated over the years by most cultures. The triumphal arches of the Roman Empire were continued in the Nineteenth Century in Paris and London.
Only Cairns and rough stones marked the resting place of the fallen from battles in this country, if at all.
