Old Bedans’ Roll of Honour,
In the final form of which Roll it is hoped to place
the Names of all Old Boys of Bede School (1890-1915)
who were in any Branch of His Majesty’s Military or Naval Forces
during the Great War which began in 1914.
Seventh draft Roll of Honour, printed in the School magazine.
Copies were later bound into two hard-backed volumes.
The name is followed by a figure which denotes the year in which the pupil left the school
There follow analyses of those who joined which sphere of service and their ranks.
627 names, date they left the school, ranks, regiment, plus the details of 7 teachers.

1. This Roll was the sixth draft to try and ascertain all the names of former pupils who had served. Advertising had been placed in various newspapers and publications. The results contained either very full descriptions or scanty ones. The final result would be published.
2. The school was about to celebrate its 25th anniversary. The war had shortened the length of stay for some pupils to two years, others had attended for four years.
3. There were ten of these draft lists published. They obviously get longer with each version. The information for some people is repeated in later versions. The result can be a bit confusing, so an Index has been prepared for researchers to be able to see the names. See link below.

OLD BEDANS’ ROLL OF HONOUR,
In the Final Form of which Roll it is hoped to place
The NAMES of all OLD BOYS of BEDE SCHOOL (1890-1916)
Who were in any Branch of His Majesty’s Military or Naval Forces
During the GREAT WAR which began in 1914.
EXPLANATORY NOTES.
A. An attempt has been made-partly by advertising in The Times,
Sunderland Daily Echo, Newcastle Daily Chronicle, Newcastle Evening
Chronicle, Newcastle Daily Journal, North Mail and Evening Mail;
partly by personal inquiries directed to Boys, Old Boys, Parents and
various other people-to procure information as to the (1) Name, (2)
Rank, (3) Regiment, Ship or other Section of the Army or Navy and (4)
Present Station, of EVERY OLD BOY now on military or naval service.
Also, information has been sought with regard to EVERY OLD BOY, who,
while serving in the War, has (1) Fallen, or (2) Become one of the
Missing, or (3) Been Wounded, or (4) Been Taken Prisoner, or (5)
Gained Special Distinction.
The particulars obtained have been in some cases full and exact; in
others, copious but obscure or contradictory; in others, again,
extremely scanty-perhaps a name, and nothing more. And there is good
reason for believing that there are dozens of Old Bedan soldiers and
sailors whose bare names, even, have not been supplied.
B. The Roll here given is based upon the materials at present available.
It is obviously incomplete, and is perhaps incorrect in several
places. But, having compiled with some amount of care in an honest
endeavour to represent the facts as far as they are known, it is more
likely to be unsatisfactory on account of omissions than by reason of
important mistakes.
The Roll at present contains the Names of 627 Old Bedans (including
several who left School to enlist), of whom 578 are in the Army
and 49 in the Navy.
An Analysis based on RANK gives the following figures:
a. ARMY:
155 Officers (1 Major, 18 Captains, 1 Chaplain, 37 Lieutenants,
98 Second-Lieutenants) 129 Non-Commissioned Officers,
(1 Co. Sergeant-Major Instructor, 2 Co. Q.M Sgts.,
1 Squadron Q.M. Sgt., 3 Staff-Sgts., 5 Q.M. Sgts.,
1 Farrier Sgt., 1 Artificer Sgt., 1 Sgt. Instructor, 36 Sgts.,
2 Lance-Sgts., 27 Corporals, 33 Lance-Corporals, 14 Bombardiers,
1 Sec.-Corporal, 1 Drill Instructor).
270 Men (183 Privates, 4 Riflemen, 37 Gunners, 11 Drivers,
14 Troopers, 16 Sappers, 1 Telegraphist, 3 Second Air Mechanics,
1 Trumpeter).
24 Cadets (1 Gentleman Cadet, Royal Military College, Woolwich;
23 Cadets – including some men who have seen active service- in O.T.
Corps).
b. NAVY: 27 Officers (4 Lieutenants, 1 Navigating Lieutenant,
3 Engineer-Lieuts., 1 Lieutenant-Gunner, 1 Navig. Officer,
2 Naval Instrs. 8 Sub-Lieuts., 5 Engineer Sub.-Lieuts.,
1 Gunnery Sub.-Lieutenant, 1 Sec.-Engineer).
22 Men (1 Warrant Engineer, 1 Chief E.R.A., 11 E.R. Artificers,
1 Signalman, 1 Gunner, 1 Wireless Operator, 2 Writers, 1 Able Seaman,
1 Ordinary Seaman, 1 Man in Armourer’s Crew, 1 Cook’s Mate).
(At the foot of the Roll appear the Names of 7 Bede School Masters
(1 Killed in action) belonging to the Army. Not being Old Boys of the
School, they are not included in the foregoing Analysis; but the
Clerk, an Old Boy serving, is so included. Also, the Names of 5
Masters who Attested under Lord Derby’s Scheme, are shown at the foot
of the Roll.)

Another Analysis of the 627 Old Bedan Soldiers and Sailors in the
Roll gives their Place of Station as follows: –
British Isles 225 (including Wounded & Invalided); British Overseas
Dominions (chiefly India and Egypt), 22; At Sea, 49; Salonika and
Mesopotamia, 13; Germany, 6; France & Flanders, 312. Of the men shown
as being in the British Isles, not a few are probably already
abroad, and many others are certain to go abroad before long.
A third Analysis of the Roll indicates the following facts with
regard to Old Boys: –
Killed in Action, 39; Died while on active service,2; Missing, 1;
Wounded, Gassed or Shell Shocked, 79; Prisoners of War in Germany, 6
(2 Wounded).
Decorations, 8; Military Cross, 4; Distinguished Conduct Medal, 1;
Military Medal, 2; Cross of Chevalier of Legion of Honour, 1.
Mentioned in Despatches, 3.
C. The figures placed after each Old Boy’s Name in the Roll show the
year of his leaving the School.
D. The Growth of the Roll has been steady. Here are the Dates when the
different Drafts were printed, and the Number of Names in each
Draft: – 1st, December, 1914, 180; 2nd March, 1915, 240; 3rd, July,
1915, 320; 4th, December, 1915, 440; 5th, April, 1916, 515; 6th, July,
1916, 570; 7th, December, 1916, 627.
E. The Roll will be augmented and amended from time to time as
additional information is received, and will be published afresh in
each Number of The Bedan which appears during the War. My colleague
Mr. (Now Gun.) T.H. Blyth assisted me to compile the earlier Drafts.
Mr J.H. Smith-White has helped with the last two. With a view to
making the Roll as comprehensive, as up-to-date, and as well-arranged
as possible, we shall at all times be glad to receive particulars or
suggestions from any quarter. Enlistments, promotions, changes in
place of station, and the addition or the alteration of other items,
daily combine to render the Roll somewhat kaleidoscopic: it varies in
appearance almost incessantly and is always attractive. To record
each new piece of information is to us a labour of love: all we ask
is that anybody who notices anything erroneous or out-of-date in the
Roll, or anything omitted which ought certainly to appear, will
kindly write to us about the matter.
I specially appeal for Names and Particulars of Old Bedans now
serving who were at the School fifteen, twenty, or twenty-five years
ago. In many cases it is hard or impossible (mainly owing to changes
of address) for me to trace nineteenth-century Old Boys. I therefore
beg them, or their relatives or acquaintances, to favour me from time
to time with a post-card giving such information as can be embodied
in the Roll.
The whole SCHOOL is most grateful to Old Boys who have supported, or
who are now supporting in arms the cause of King and Country, and
also to their parents and friends. We are wishful and eager, as has
already been indicated, to have a full list of those Old Boy’s names.
We shall watch, with pride, interest, sympathy, and affection, the
careers of all Old Bedans taking part in the War; and we shall ever
remember with special gratitude the men who fall. We hope and pray
that, by making the supreme sacrifice, they may gain an even better
reward than grateful remembrance.
“Whosoever shall lose his life shall preserve it” (Luke xvii,33); and
an Old Bedan who dies in battle for the right may perhaps realise the
full significance of his school motto Post Tenebras Lux:

PRIVATE ARTHUR OSBORN BELL.
20. Son of Mr George Bell, 33, Ashwood Terrace, Sunderland. At the
School From 1908 to 1912 and passed Oxford Loc. Junior and Senior
Exams. Went afterwards to Nantes, mainly to study French. Tried to
join the French Army when the War broke out, but was rejected as too
young. Joined the 18th Durham Light Infantry, October, 1914. Served
sometime in Egypt. Killed in action in France, July 1st, 1916. His
brother, Lieutenant Howard Bell, is in the Indian Officers’ Reserve.
CORPORAL PERCY V.S. BREWIS.
24. Son of Mr James Brewis, 10 Whitehouse Crescent, Sunderland. At
the School for nearly three years. Left in 1906. Was a butcher.
Joined the 20th Durham Light Infantry. Died in France on October 1st,
1916, of wounds received in action on September 21st.
PRIVATE NOEL B. ELRICK
21. Son of Mr J. Elrick, contractor, formerly of Roker, now of
Edmonton, Alberta. At the School from 1905 to 1910. Joined a Canadian
Infantry battalion. Killed in action in France, July 25th, 1916.
CAPTAIN GEORGE BOYD FOULKES.
25. Son of Mr G.M. Foulkes, 1 Elizabeth Street, Sunderland. At the
School from 1904 to 1909. Passed the Oxford Loc. Senior Exam. Then,
as a theological student, he took an Honours degree (M.A.) at
Edinburgh University, and divided the Blackie Scholarship. Proceeding
next to St. John’s College, Oxford, he had nearly completed the
course for an Honours degree as an advanced student when the War
began. Gazetted Temp.-Lieutenant, 6/7th Royal Scots Fusiliers,
September 1914, Lieutenant May 1915; Captain, November, 1915. Wounded
at Loos, September, 1915. First Wounded in the hand, and then killed
by a shell, at Martinpuich, August 12th, 1916. Colonel Gordon speaks
of this gallant officer’s “strict integrity, devotion to duty, and
fine example”.
PRIVATE WILFRID GOLDSBROUGH.
25. Son of Mrs and the late Mr G.R. Goldsbrough, 135 Cleveland Road,
Sunderland. At the School from 1904 to 1906. Joined the 15th West
Yorks. Regiment. Fell in France on July 1st, 1916. His brother, Mr
G.R. Goldsbrough, D.Sc. is a distinguished Old Bedan.
LIEUTENANT THOMAS WILLIAM HETHERINGTON.
23. Son of Mrs and the late Mr T.W. Hetherington, 45 Neale Street,
Sunderland. Had a brilliant course at the School from 1906 to 1911.
Was a Student-Teacher for a year. Gained First Class Honours in the
Oxford Junior and Senior Loc. Examns., a First Division Pass in the
London Matriculation Examn., a Drapers’ Company’s Exhibition tenable
at Cambridge, and an Exhibition at Trinity College, Cambridge. Was in
the School Football team, and took an active part in the Debating
Society. Got his College “colours” at Trinity for football, and, in
the University, just missed being a “Blue”. Took both parts of the
Historical Tripos, and graduated B.A. in 1914. Joined the 12th Durham
Light Infantry. Killed in action in France, July 17, 1916 – just
seven weeks after having been at home for his father’s funeral.
LANCE-CORPORAL ERIC ILIFF.
18. Son of Mr Harold Iliff, South Side, Cleadon. Was a Durham
County Council Junior Scholar at Bede School for a year, and was
transferred to Ryhope Secondary School in 1911, when the County
Council opened that school. An apprentice engineer at the Scotia
Engine Works. Joined the 7th Durham Light Infantry, two years ago.
Killed in action, when with the 10th Durham Light Infantry, near
Delville Wood, September 16, 1916.
GUNNER DOUGLAS MITCHELL.
20. Son of Mr G.M. Mitchell, veterinary surgeon, 27 Beechwood Street,
Sunderland. Was at Bede School for 5 years, passed the Oxford Loc.
Junior and Senior Examns., got his “colours” for both cricket and
Football, and left in 1913. Joined the Royal Field Artillery and fell
in France, October 16, 1916. His brothers, Captain W.M. Mitchell
(mentioned in Sir John French’s Despatch, June 23, 1915), Captain
G.O. Mitchell, and Captain T.M. Mitchell, are all Old Bedans.
SECOND-LIEUTENANT ERIC LOFTUS PERRIS.
20. Only son of Mr F.F. Perris, ship surveyor, formerly of
Sunderland, and now of 20, Breckon Hill Road, Middlesbrough, and
nephew of Mr G.H. Perris, the well-known war correspondent. Left Bede
School in 1907, and went to Middlesbrough High School. Joined the 4th
Yorks. Regiment as Private. Was made Lance-Corporal, and afterwards
received a Commission. Killed in action in France, September 27 1916.
CORPORAL ROBERT WILSON SEPHTON.
19. Son of Mrs and the late Mt A.W.J. Sephton, 19 Farnham Terrace,
Sunderland. At the School from 1911 to 1913. Was top boy in Forms
Lower IV and Upper IV. Became a clerk at Sunderland Town Hall (Health
Dept.). Joined the 18th Durham Light Infantry, and served some time
in Egypt. Killed in action in France, November 17th, 1916.
LANCE-SERGEANT WILLIAM WORTHINGTON WILSON.
23. Son of Captain S.W. Wilson, 10 Azalea Avenue, Sunderland. At the
School from 1905 to 1908. Went into mercantile marine. Joined the
18th (Lord Durham’s County Battalion) Durham Light Infantry, and
served some time in Egypt. Killed in action in France, July 1st, 1916.

Master at Melton Mowbray Grammar School from 1911 to 1915. Gazetted
to 11th South Staffordshire Regiment in 1915. Attached to Machine Gun
Corps, March, 1916.
“Fell, while in charge of his section, at the head of his team” – so
says his Commanding Officer-in France, October 19, 1916.
