Old Bedan’s Roll of Honour,
In the final form of which Roll it is hoped to place
the Names of all Old Boys of Bede School (1890-1915)
who were in any Branch of His Majesty’s Military or Naval Forces
during the Great War which began in 1914.
Sixth draft Roll of Honour, printed in the School magazine.
Copies were later bound into two hard-backed volumes.
The name is followed by a figure which denotes the year in which the pupil left the school
There follow analyses of those who joined which sphere of service and their ranks.
570 names, date they left the school, ranks, regiment, plus the details of 7 teachers.

1. This Roll was the sixth draft to try and ascertain all the names of former pupils who had served. Advertising had been placed in various newspapers and publications. The results contained either very full descriptions or scanty ones. The final result would be published.
2. The school was about to celebrate its 25th anniversary. The war had shortened the length of stay for some pupils to two years, others had attended for four years.
3. There were ten of these draft lists published. They obviously get longer with each version. The information for some people is repeated in later versions. The result can be a bit confusing, so an Index has been prepared for researchers to be able to see the names. See link below.

OF AN
OLD BEDANS’ ROLL OF HONOUR,
In the FINAL FORM of which Roll it is hoped to place
The NAMES of all OLD BOYS of BEDE SCHOOL (1890-1916)
Who were in any Branch of His Majesty’s Military or Naval Forces
During the GREAT WAR which began in 1914.
EXPLANATORY NOTES.
A. An attempt has been made-partly by advertising in The Times,
Sunderland Daily Echo, Newcastle Daily Chronicle, Newcastle Evening
Chronicle, Newcastle Daily Journal, North Mail and Evening Mail,
partly by personal inquiries to Boys, Old Boys, Parents and various
other people-to procure information as to the (1) Name, (2) Rank,
(3) Regiment, Ship, or other Section of the Army or Navy, and (4)
Present Station, of EVERY OLD BOY now on military or naval service.
Also, information has been sought with regard to EVERY OLD BOY who,
while serving in the War, has (1) Fallen, or (2) Become one of the
Missing, or (3) Been Wounded, or (4) Been Taken Prisoner, or (5)
Gained Special Distinction.
The particulars obtained have been in some cases full and exact, in
others, copious but obscure or contradictory, in others, again,
extremely scanty-perhaps a name, and nothing more. And there is good
reason for believing that there are hundreds of Old Bedan soldiers
and sailors whose bare names, even, have not been supplied.
B. The Roll here given is based upon the materials at present available.
It is obviously incomplete, and is perhaps incorrect in several
places. But, having been compiled with some amount of care in an
honest endeavour to represent the facts as far as they are known, it
is more likely to be unsatisfactory on account of omissions than by
reason of important mistakes.
The Roll at present contains the Names of 570 Old Bedans (including
several who left School to enlist), of whom 521 are in the Army
and 49 in the Navy.
An Analysis based on RANK gives the following figures:
a. ARMY:
135 Officers (2 Majors, 15 Captains, 1 Chaplain, 26 Lieutenants,
91 Second Lieutenants).
116 Non-Commissioned Officers (1 Co. Sergeant-Major Instructor,
1 Co. Q.M. Sergt., 1 Squadron Q M. Sergt., 2 Staff Sergts.,
5 Q.M. Sergts., 32 Sergeants, 2 Lance Sergeants, 28 Corporals,
29 Lance-Corporals, 13 Bombardiers, 1 Sec.-Corporal,
1 Drill Instructor).
250 Men (181 Privates, 4 Riflemen, 27 Gunners, 10 Drivers,
15 Troopers, 10 Sappers, 2 Second Air Mechanics, 1 Trumpeter.)
20 Cadets, O.T.C.
b. NAVY:
27 Officers (6 Lieutenants, 1 Navigating Lieutenant,
3 Engineer-Lieutenants, 1 Lieutenant-Gunner, 2 Naval Instructors,
1 Navigating Officer, 6 Sub-Lieutenants, 6 Engineer-Sub-Lieutenants,
1 Gunnery Sub-Lieutenant).
22 Men (1 Warrant Engineer, 12 E.R. Artificers, 1 Signalman,
1 Gunner, 1 Wireless Operator, 2 Writers, 1 Able Seaman,
1 Ordinary Seaman, 1 Man in Armourer’s Crew, 1 Cook’s Mate).
(At the foot of the Roll appear the names of 7 Bede School Masters (1
Killed in Action) belonging to the Army. Not being Old Boys of the
School, they are not included in the foregoing Analysis, but the
Clerk, an Old Boy serving, is so included. Also, the names of 5
Masters who attested under Lord Derby’s Scheme, are shown at the foot
of the Roll.)

Another Analysis of the 570 Old Bedan Soldiers and Sailors in the
Roll gives their PLACE of STATION as follows: –
British Isles, 270 (including Wounded and Invalided), British
Overseas Dominions (chiefly India and Egypt), 25, At Sea, 46,
Salonika and Mesopotamia, 20, France and Flanders, 209. Of the men
shown as being in the British Isles, not a few are probably already
abroad and many others are certain to go abroad before long.
A Third Analysis of the Roll indicates the following facts with
regard to Old Boys: –
Killed in action, 26, Died while on Active Service, 2, Wounded or
Gassed, 53, Prisoners of War, in Germany, 5 (2 Wounded).
Decorations: Military Cross, 1, Distinguished Conduct Medal, 1, Cross
of Chevalier of Legion of Honour, 1. Mentioned in Despatches, 3.
C. The figures placed after each Old Boy’s Name in the Roll show the
year of his leaving the School.
D. The GROWTH of the Roll has been steady. Here are the Dates when the
different Drafts were printed, and the Number of Names in each
Draft: -1st, Dec.,1914, 180; 2nd, March, 1915, 240; 3rd, July 1915,
320; 4th, Dec., 1915, 440; 5th, April, 1916, 515; 6 July, 1916, 570.
E. The Roll will be augmented and amended from time to time as
additional information is received, and will be published afresh in
each Number of The Bedan which appears during the War. My colleague
Mr (now Gun.) T.H. Blyth assisted me to compile the earlier Drafts.
Mr J.H. Smith-White has helped with the present one. With a view to
making the Roll as comprehensive, as up-to-date, and as well arranged
as possible, we shall at all times be glad to receive particulars or
suggestions from any quarter. Enlistments, promotions, changes in
place of station, and the addition or the alteration of other items,
daily combine to render the Roll somewhat kaleidoscopic: it varies in
appearance almost incessantly, and is always attractive. To record
each new piece of information is to us a labour of love: all that we
ask is that anybody who notices anything erroneous or out-of-date in
the Roll or anything omitted which ought certainly to appear, will
kindly write to us about the matter.
I specially appeal for Names and Particulars of Old Bedans now
serving who were at the School fifteen, twenty, or twenty-five years
ago. In many cases it is hard or impossible (mainly owing to changes
of address) for me to trace nineteenth-century Old Boys. I therefore
beg them, or their relatives or acquaintances, to favour me from time
to time with a postcard giving such information as can be embodied in
the Roll.
The whole SCHOOL is most grateful to Old Boys who have supported, or
who are now supporting in arms the cause of King and Country, and
also to their parents and friends. We are wishful and eager, as has
already been indicted, to have a full list of Old Boys’ names. We
shall watch, with pride, interest, sympathy, and affection, the
careers of all Old Bedans taking part in the War, and we shall ever
remember with special gratitude the men who fall. We hope and pray
that by making the supreme sacrifice, they may gain an even better
reward than grateful remembrance.
“Whosoever shall lose his life shall preserve it”; and an Old Bedan
who dies in battle for the right may perhaps realise the full
significance of his school motto Post Tenebras Lux: After Darkness,
Light.

29. Son of Coun. E.H. Brown, J.P., Ex-Mayor of Sunderland, of
Fulwell House. At the School from ’98 to ’01. Was a solicitor.
Married. Resided at 50 Barclay Street. Private, Machine Gun
Section, 7th Durham Light Infantry. Killed in action, Flanders,
Whit Monday, 1915.
CAPT. GORDON HASWELL, B.A., L.R.A.M.
24. Son of Mr. R. Haswell, Thornhill Gardens, Sunderland. At the
School from ’04 to ’10. Passed the Oxford Locals and London
Matriculation, got” Colours” for cricket and football, took an
active part in the Debating Society, and was accompanist in School
Orchestra. A very well-known Bedan. Took an Honours degree at
Durham University in ’13, and was prominent in games. Before the
War, was an Assistant Master for a year at Harrow County School.
Capital musician. Joined K.O.Y.L.I. and rose to be Captain. Killed
in action in France, July 2nd, 1916. His brother, Lieut. Frederick
Haswell, an Old Bedan, was killed in Flanders, April 25th, 1915.
SEC.-LIEUT. WILLIAM BEVERIDGE IBBITSON.
Nearly 23. Son of Mr W.E. Ibbitson, Grace Terrace, Sunderland. At
the School from ’06 to ’09. Passed Oxford Junior Exam. After
servicing his articles with Mr Hugh Hedley, architect, took a post
in the Government Land Valuation Offices. Gazetted to 14th West
Yorks. Regiment, June, ’15. Married, October, 1915, daughter of Mr
James Fowler, Ex-Mayor of Selkirk. Killed, France, July 1st, 1916.
PRIVATE GEORGE LOUNTON.
29. Brother of Mr C. Lounton, Whitehouse Road, Sunderland. At the
School in ’98 and ’99. A journalist on “Shields Gazette” staff.
Private, Durham Light Infantry, first in Egypt and then in France.
Killed, June 24, 1916.
PRIVATE CHARLES LILBURN PATTISON.
23. Son of the late Mr T. Pattison, Rainton Street, Sunderland,
And brother of Mrs Berryman, Fence Houses (whose boy Ronald, is a
Bedan). At the School from ’06 to ’10. Good singer and violinist.
Was “Sergeant of Police”, one Speech Day. A schoolmaster. Private,
7th Durham Light Infantry. Killed, Flanders, Whit Monday, 1915.
LANCE-CORPORAL ARTHUR SMITH.
27. Son of the late Mrs S. Smith, Valebrooke, Sunderland. Uncle of
Norman Wardropper, now a Bedan. At the School from ’99 to ’02.
Second mate of a Westoll ship. Lance-Corporal, 7th Durham Light
Infantry. Killed, Flanders, Whit Monday, 1915.
CAPTAIN STEWART ALEXANDER WHITE M.A.
Capt. White, Northumberland Fusiliers, who (after fighting in
France on July 1st and 2nd) was officially reported “missing,
believed killed”, was educated at Oxford High School, and at
University College, Oxford, where he won an open mathematical
scholarship, gained a first class in mathematical moderations, and
took an honours degree in mathematics. He was a master
successively at Colchester Grammar School, South Shields High
School and Bede Collegiate School (where he was appointed in
April,1914).

He was N.C.O. in the Territorial Force for several years,
but resigned at Easter, 1914. Married just before the war, he
joined the Tyneside Scottish, November, 1914, being gazetted
lieutenant, and was soon promoted captain, and was adjutant for
twelve months. Capt. White stood about 6ft.3in., was 30 years old,
and looked the picture of health and good spirits when he visited
Bede School a few weeks ago. Much sympathy is felt with his
widow, whose present address is 30 Sea View, South Shields.)
