Eighth Draft, somewhat Rough and Incomplete, made Dec. 13th 1917,
of an
Old Bedans’ Roll of Honour,
In the final form of which Roll it is hoped to place
the Names of all Old Boys of Bede School (1890-1915)
who were in any Branch of His Majesty’s Military or Naval Forces
during the Great War which began in 1914.
Eighth draft Roll of Honour, printed in the School magazine.
Copies were later bound into two hard-backed volumes.
The name is followed by a figure which denotes the year in which the pupil left the school
There follow analyses of those who joined which sphere of service and their ranks.
730 names, date they left the school, ranks, regiment, plus the details of 7 teachers.

1. This Roll was the eighth draft to try and ascertain all the names of former pupils who had served. Advertising had been placed in various newspapers and publications. The results contained either very full descriptions or scanty ones. The final result would be published.
2. The school was about to celebrate its 25th anniversary. The war had shortened the length of stay for some pupils to two years, others had attended for four years.
3. There were ten of these draft lists published. They obviously get longer with each version. The information for some people is repeated in later versions. The result can be a bit confusing, so an Index has been prepared for researchers to be able to see the names. See link below.

SECOND-LIEUTENANT ROBERT STAFFORD ALLISON.
25 years of age. Son of Mrs A.J. Allison and husband of
Mrs N. Allison, Roker House, Sunderland. Brother of Corporal Edwin
Allison, Royal Sussex (invalided out after losing a leg at Loos) and
Corporal George F. Allison, Machine Gun Corps, who served in France
and Egypt and was wounded.
At Bede School from ’04 to ’07. Was in a Form 22 boys from which have
joined the Army, several now being among the Fallen.
Clerk, Newcastle offices of N.E.R. As Trooper and Lance-Corporal in
Northumberland Hussars was 2 years in France and Flanders, and saw
much fighting. Gazetted to Denbighshire Yeomanry. Afterwards attached
to Royal Welsh Fusiliers. Killed, Palestine, June 16, 1917.
PRIVATE HENRY OSWALD ARMSTRONG.
19.Son of Mr A. Armstrong, 4 Clarence Street, Southwick. At the
School from ’09 to ’11. Civil Service Clerk. Joined London Regiment.

Buried with military honours, Sunderland. Headmaster of Bede School
attended funeral.

20. son of Mr S. Bernstein, 12 Mowbray Road, Sunderland. At the
School from ’09 to ’13. Passed the Oxford Local Junior and Senior
Examinations and also the London Matriculation. Chemist’s Assistant.
Joined R.A.M.C., B.E.F., France. Died of wounds, March 5, 1917.
SECOND-LIEUTENANT ROBERT LESLIE FAIRCLOUGH.
27. Son of Mrs. F. Fairclough, Mistletoe Rd., Newcastle, and brother
of Lieut. Wilfrid Fairclough, M.B., B.S. (served in Gallipoli),
Pte. Stewart M. Fairclough, N.Z. Force, Mesopotamia, and Dr. Harold
Fairclough, all Old Bedans. Was at the School from ’01 to ’05.
Asst.-Surveyor for Urban District, first at Southwick, afterwards at
Blyth. As L.-Corporal, R.E., was wounded in France, June, ’16.
Gazetted to R.E. Killed, France, May 5, 1917.
PRIVATE JAMES WILLIAM GIBBS.
37. Son of the late Capt. Henry Gibbs, 26 Ormonde Street, Sunderland.
Husband of Mrs. Gibbs, 67 Hawarden Crescent. At the School from ’90
to ’94. His brothers, Robert, Watson, and George, are Old Bedans. He
and Robert were among the best of the many capital swimmers that the
School has had. Ironmonger. Joined Royal Welsh Fusiliers. Killed,
Palestine, June 16, 1917.
CAPTAIN WALTER R. GOODRICK, M.C.
25. Son of Mr W. Goodrick, 1 Co-operative Terrace Sunderland. At the
School from ’06 to ’10. Good hockey player. Went to Sunderland
Training College. Young schoolmaster. Joined D.L.I. as private at
beginning of war, and gained rapid promotion. Awarded Military Cross,
Nov. 26, 1916. Gazette: “When in command of two companies of
Pioneers, under intense fire he carried out the work with great
courage and determination. He set a splendid example to his men.”
Killed, France, New Year’s Day, 1917.
SECOND-LIEUTENANT RONALD WM. CRAIG GUNN.
19. Son of the late Mr Walter C. Gunn, and grandson of Mrs Gunn, 24
Side Cliff Road, Roker. At the School from ’06 to ’10, and passed the
Oxford Local Junior Examination with Honours. Afterwards went to
Durham School, and thence to Queens’ College, Cambridge. Good as
Scholar and as athletes. Joined Sherwood Foresters. Killed, France,
January 6, 1917. His brother, E.R.A. Walter C. Gunn, (not an old
Bedan) was killed on H.M.S. “Queen Mary” in the battle of Jutland.
Another brother, Fred C. Gunn, in now at Bede School.
PRIVATE JAS. WM. MORTON.
19. The son of Mr T. Morton, 24 Beechwood Street, Sunderland. At the
School from ’08 to ’11. Assistant-Superintendent Board of Trade,
South Shields, after having been a Clerk at the Admiralty. Joined the
Honourable Artillery Company. Killed, France, May 3, 1917.
SECOND LIEUTENANT WM. HAROLD RICHARDSON.
24. Son of Mr Wm. Richardson, Ettrick Grove, Sunderland. At the
School from ’06 to ’09. Brother of Second-Lieutenant
Hugh B. Richardson, N.F. an old Bedan. Was a ship’s draughtsman
at Laing’s. Enlisted in R.G.A. Gazetted to D.L.I., October, 1915.
Killed, April 14, 1917.
LANCE-CORPORAL HERBERT SAVORY.
23. Son of Mr Geo. Savory. Husband of Mrs Miriam Savory, Roker Villa,
Harbour View, Sunderland. At the School from ’04 to ’07. Organist,
St. John’s Church, Sunderland. Storekeeper, Sunderland Shipbuilding
Company. Joined D.L.I. Killed, France, June 10, 1917.
COMPANY SERGEANT MAJOR DOUGLAS SMITH TWEEDIE.
25. Son of Mrs A.M. Tweedie, 66 Cleveland Road, Sunderland. At the
School from ’05 to ’10. Musical. Went to Armstrong College. Assistant
Master, Redby School. Joined Northern Cyclists’ Battalion. Was
transferred to Northumberland Fusiliers and rose to be C.S.M. Awarded
Military Medal for gallantry in the field in France, April 9, 1917.
Died of wounds, May 2.
