QUARRINGTON HILL Community Centre
He whom this scroll commemorates
was numbered among those who,
at the call of King and Country, left all
that was dear to them, endured hardness,
faced danger, and finally passed out of
the sight of men by the path of duty
and self-sacrifice, giving up their own
lives that others might live in freedom.
Let those who come after see to it
that his name be not forgotten.
-----------------------------------
It is over 80 years since the armistice silenced
the guns of the World War I, a war which forever
changed the political map of Europe and
claimed over 10 million lives between the
years of 1914 and 1918.
Sadly, the losses of World War II between
1939 and 1945 were as horrendous as its
earlier counterpart with an estimated total
of 60 million deaths before its end.
This book is dedicated to those men from the
parish of Quarrington Hill who lost their lives
while serving their country in these wars
“We can truly say that the whole circuit of the earth is girdled with
the graves of our dead . . . and, in the course of my pilgrimage, I have
many times asked myself whether there can be more potent advocates
of peace upon earth through the years to come, than this massed
multitude of silent witnesses to the desolution of war "
King George V, Flanders, 1922
