He whom this scroll commemorates / was numbered among those who, / at the call of King and Country, left all / that was dear to them, endured hardness, / faced danger, and finally passed out of / the sight of men by the path of duty / and self-sacrifice, giving up their own / lives that others might live in freedom. / Let those who come after see to it / that his name be not forgotten. /
It is over 80 years since the armistice silenced / the guns of the World War I, a war which forever / changed the political map of Europe and / claimed over 10 million lives between the / years of 1914 and 1918. / Sadly, the losses of World War II between / 1939 and 1945 were as horrendous as its / earlier counterpart with an estimated total / of 60 million deaths before its end. /
This book is dedicated to those men from the / parish of Quarrington Hill who lost their lives / while serving their country in these wars /
“We can truly say that the whole circuit of the earth is girdled with / the graves of our dead . . . and, in the course of my pilgrimage, I have / many times asked myself whether there can be more potent advocates / of peace upon earth through the years to come, than this massed / multitude of silent witnesses to the desolution of war " / King George V, Flanders, 1922
